7 reasons runners are ditching bottles and belts for a vest

Carrying water on a long run used to mean a bottle in one hand or a belt that rides up. Here's why more runners are switching, and what to look for so the vest doesn't let you down.

Hands free on a Brisbane river path.

Once your runs get past an hour, or the Aussie summer kicks in, you need to carry water. The question is how.

A bottle in one hand throws off your arm swing. A belt bounces and slides up your waist. That's why the hydration vest, once something only ultra runners wore, is now the go-to for everyday long runs. Here's what it changes, and what separates a good one from a bad one.

1

Your arms get to run again

Gripping a bottle for an hour tenses your forearm and shoulder, and it tips your arm swing to one side. You feel it most when you're tired.

A vest puts the weight on your body, not in your hand, so both arms swing freely and evenly.

Empty hands, better form.

2

You carry enough for a real long run

One handheld runs dry fast on a hot morning. A vest carries two flasks up front, plus room for more, so you're not planning your route around taps and servos.

3

It sits where weight doesn't swing

A belt carries the load at your hips, the part of your body that moves most when you run, so it bounces and rides up. A vest holds it high and close to your chest, which moves far less.

4

Your phone, keys and gels finally have a home

STRYDE Pro loaded with flasks, gels and a phone

No more phone in your hand or keys jangling in your shorts. Everything sits on the front of the vest where you can reach it without stopping: two soft flasks up top, gels in the side pocket and your phone zipped away down low.

So, any vest will do?

Not quite. A vest only beats a bottle or a belt if it stays still. Most vests hold the load with two thin chest straps and a few buckles, and every step slowly loosens them. By the half-way mark the vest has let itself out and the bounce you were trying to escape is back.

So before you buy, here are the three things worth looking for, and how we built the STRYDE Pro around each one.

5

What to look for #1A fit you can tighten on the move

This is the big one. Straps creep and only ever loosen, so look for a vest that holds its tension and lets you fix it without stopping.

STRYDE Dial-Fit pulls in every anchor point at once, chest, ribs and underarms, with one turn. Felt it shift on a descent? Click the dial and keep running.

One turn. That's the fit.

6

What to look for #2No seams where you chafe

Two straps carrying the whole load means two narrow lines of pressure, and with sweat and salt that's where rubbing starts.

The STRYDE Pro spreads tension across your whole torso, and the mesh has no seams across the collarbone or underarms, the two spots runners chafe first.

7

What to look for #3Seen in the dark, ready for the trail

STRYDE Pro reflective detailing

Pre-dawn and after-work runs mean sharing the road with headlights. Reflective detailing wraps the front, back and shoulders of the STRYDE Pro.

For trail days there's a whistle built into the sternum buckle, often mandatory kit at Aussie trail races, and rear straps to carry your poles.

Built for the road, ready for the trail.

Quick answers

Is it one size?

Yes. The Dial-Fit harness adjusts across a 76 to 124cm chest. Instead of matching your body to a fixed size, you pull the vest in to meet it.

Flasks or a bladder?

Both. Flasks are quicker to refill and easier to drink from at pace. A bladder carries more. The vest is set up for either, so you can switch depending on the run.

Will my phone fit?

Yes. There's a dedicated zipped front pocket sized for most phones, including with a case on.

What if the dial breaks?

It's covered by the two-year warranty along with the seams, zips and buckles. Post it back and we'll send a replacement.
